
Why Gallium Iodide Lamps Actually Matter for Your UV Curing
If you’ve ever dealt with ink that feels tacky or “wet” underneath a hard surface, you know exactly how frustrating it is. That’s usually where gallium iodide lamps come into play. Most people start with standard mercury lamps, but those aren’t always the right tool for the job. Gallium iodide tubes shift the light spectrum—specifically hitting that 320nm to 400nm sweet spot. It’s a subtle change in physics, but it makes a massive difference when you’re working with thick inks or heavy-duty adhesives. The “Skinning” Problem Here is the thing: when you use a shortwave lamp on a thick layer of ink, the top surface hardens almost instantly. It “skins over.” That sounds great until you realize the surface has basically created a shield, trapping unreacted monomers underneath. You end up with a product that looks cured but is actually mushy in the middle. Gallium iodide lamps fix this. They punch through that top layer, reaching deep into the substrate to make sure the whole thing is cured solid. Keeping Things Cool Now, these aren’t “plug and play” in the simplest sense. You have to make sure your ballast matches the lamp’s voltage and amperage perfectly. And they runhot. Because they pack so much power to keep your line moving fast, your cooling system has to be up to the task. Whether you’re using air or water jackets, don’t cut corners here. If the cooling lags, the quartz envelope takes the hit, and your lamps will burn out way sooner than they should. More Than Just a Part Number We don’t just toss tubes in a box and ship them. That’s not how real production works. We’ve seen too many shops try to fix a curing problem by just cranking up the wattage. Usually, that’s a mistake. You aren’t lacking power; you’re lacking the right kind of light. We’d rather look at your line speed and how thick your ink is to find the right balance. It’s about getting a perfect cure without killing your lamps every few hundred hours or wasting a ton of electricity. It just makes the whole operation run smoother.
